The Lichhof or “Leichenhof” to the east of the triconch (trefoil) choirs originally lay within the Abbey District, surrounded by a wall, with residential and commercial buildings. Here was one of the cemeteries for the inhabitants of the monastery, which lay around the church. The preserved “Dreikönigspförtchen” with its sculpture group was one of the gates that gave access to the monastery area. The Archbishop of Cologne, Rainald von Dassel, is said to have brought the remains of the Magi into the city through this little gate in 1164.
